Authorities Investigate Alleged Animal Abuse Incident at Pek Kio Hawker Centre

In a disturbing incident captured on TikTok, an elderly woman is seen allegedly caning a dog at Pek Kio Market and Food Centre in Singapore. The video has prompted an investigation by the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS), shedding light on a potential case of animal cruelty. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has also weighed in, revealing that the woman had been warned before regarding similar concerns.

The 86-second TikTok video, posted by user "AventMetier," shows an elderly woman brandishing a cane and seemingly using it to intimidate a brown dog at the hawker center. While it remains unclear from the footage whether the dog was physically harmed, the actions of the woman are deeply concerning. The TikTok user expressed distress over the incident, calling for assistance from dog groups and community organizations.

SPCA's Involvement:

Addressing the incident in an Instagram post, SPCA revealed that they had previously identified the woman in connection with similar animal welfare concerns. A visit to her residence on May 4, 2023, resulted in guidance and counseling to ensure the well-being of her pets. Despite a firm warning issued at that time, it appears that the woman did not adhere to the recommended guidelines.

Repeat Offender:

The SPCA emphasized that the woman in question is a repeat offender, and her actions have escalated to the point where further action is necessary. The organization has escalated the matter to unspecified authorities, indicating the severity of the situation. The SPCA reiterated their stance on humane training methods, urging pet owners to avoid resorting to physical harm or threats that may distress their animals.

AVS Investigation:

AVS, in response to queries from TODAY, confirmed that they are actively investigating the video. Jessica Kwok, the group director of AVS, stated that the agency takes all reports of animal cruelty seriously and emphasizes the shared responsibility of safeguarding animal welfare. Members of the public are encouraged to report suspected cases promptly through AVS's website or the Animal Response Centre hotline.

The alleged incident of animal abuse at Pek Kio Hawker Centre has sparked concern among animal welfare organizations and the public. With both AVS and SPCA involved, it is hoped that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and appropriate actions will be taken to ensure the well-being of the dog and prevent further instances of cruelty. This case underscores the importance of raising awareness about responsible pet ownership and the consequences of mistreating animals.
