Travelling with pets can be a daunting task, particularly when it involves air travel. However, for pet owners in Singapore, the good news is that several airlines facilitate the journey by allowing pets in the cabin. In this article, we will explore one of the prominent airlines in Singapore that permit pets in the cabin and delve into their specific policies.

Singapore Airlines distinguishes itself as a top choice for pet owners, offering the option to bring small dogs or cats into the cabin, ensuring a comfortable journey for both the owner and their furry companion. To adhere to the airline's guidelines, it is imperative to consider specific requirements. Firstly, pets must be a minimum of 16 weeks old and possess all necessary vaccinations and documents. Secondly, there is a weight limit to be mindful of, with the combined weight of the pet and carrier not exceeding 7 kg for most flights. However, this limit is extended to 10 kg for flights to and from the US.

When considering Singapore Airlines for pet travel, it is crucial to be aware of the booking process and associated fees. Only one pet is allowed per passenger, and fees ranging from SGD100 to SGD250 apply, depending on the destination. To secure a spot for your furry friend, direct communication with Singapore Airlines' reservations team is necessary, providing all the required documents and information. During the flight, it's essential to follow in-flight guidelines, ensuring that your pet remains securely in the carrier under the seat in front of you for the duration of the journey.

However, a smooth journey requires meticulous preparation and adherence to guidelines such as below:

Checked Baggage:

Your pet, at least three months old, can accompany you on the same flight as checked baggage, with Singapore Airlines accommodating most domesticated cats and dog breeds. However, depending on your departure, destination, or transit country, additional restrictions may apply. It's crucial to note that if the combined weight of your pet(s) and its container exceeds 32kg, arrangements for cargo travel must be made due to Occupational Health and Safety rules.

Cargo Travel:

For those seeking a more controlled environment, arranging for your pet to travel in the air-conditioned comfort of the cargo is an option. To facilitate this, contacting your local Singapore Airlines Cargo office before the flight is essential. To ease the process, a self-checklist for travelling with pets as checked baggage is recommended.

Documentation and Requirements:

Preparation begins well before your departure date. Contacting the local Singapore Airlines office at least two weeks in advance is advised, providing essential information about your pet, including type, breed, age, weight, and container dimensions. Each country has specific requirements, so checking local regulations is crucial. Necessary documents for pets travelling out of Singapore include an export licence, indemnity form, veterinary health certificate, rabies vaccination letter, transshipment licence (if any), and the pet's passport (if any). Similarly, different documentation is needed for pets travelling to or transiting in Singapore.

Pet Container Requirements:

Adhering to IATA standards, the design and construction of the pet's container are vital. The container must be of the right size, well-ventilated, and properly secured. Specific dimensions are determined by your pet's size, ensuring a safe and comfortable journey. Puppies or kittens from the same litter may share a container if they are three to six months old and weigh less than 14kg each.

Check-in at least two hours before your flight, or three hours for departures, pets should be checked in at the same counter as the passenger, presenting the required documents and a signed indemnity form. After check-in, pets are stored in the baggage area and transported to the aircraft just before departure. Inside the aircraft, pets are placed in the temperature-controlled bulk cargo hold, ensuring their well-being during the flight.

Connections, Transshipments, and Fees:

For interline carriage with other airlines, compliance with their rules is necessary. Importing, exporting, or transshipping pets in Singapore requires relevant Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS) licences. Pets transiting through Singapore for more than six hours are safely transferred to the Ground Handling Agent, SATS, with no feeding or walking during this period. It's important to note that charges apply for pet travel, and additional fees may be incurred for transiting or transshipping in Singapore.

When planning to travel with your pet, keep in mind that individual airlines may impose specific requirements, including the necessity for health certificates or additional fees. To obtain the most current and accurate information regarding their pet travel policies, it is recommended to directly contact the airline or visit their official website. Additionally, to guarantee a seamless journey for both you and your furry companion, it is advisable to plan and book your pet's travel well in advance.
