Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) has become an increasingly popular method for providing emotional and psychological support to patients in healthcare settings. At AMK-THKH (Ang Mo Kio - Thye Hua Kwan Hospital), the integration of furry volunteers in therapeutic sessions has created a unique, compassionate environment that promotes healing, social interaction, and mental well-being. The hospital runs two specialized programs — Dog Therapy and Cat Therapy — designed to leverage the unique strengths of both animals to help patients manage their emotional health.

The Beginning: History of Animal-Assisted Therapy at AMK-THKH

The AAT program at AMK-THKH began in 2013 after studies demonstrated the positive effects animals can have on improving a patient’s mood and social well-being. Initially launched as a monthly session, the program quickly gained popularity, expanding to twice a month due to its overwhelming success. The hospital recognized early on the benefits that pet therapy brought to their patients, particularly in terms of emotional comfort, reduced stress, and enhanced social interaction.

The Objective: Enhancing Quality of Life Through Animal Interaction

The primary objective of these programs is to enhance the quality of life for patients by encouraging interaction with animals, providing a space for reminiscence, and creating emotional bonds between patients, volunteers, and staff. The AAT sessions aim to alleviate the stress, anxiety, and loneliness that often accompany illness or long-term hospitalization. The focus is not only on therapeutic benefits but also on creating a joyful environment where patients can emotionally reconnect with their past experiences of pet ownership or simply enjoy the comforting presence of animals.

While detailed measures of effectiveness are tracked in some therapy sessions, such as those involving occupational therapy (OT), the AAT program is largely focused on the social aspects of patient well-being. Although the hospital doesn’t currently measure the impact in detail, they are open to collaborating with partners on further studies to assess these benefits comprehensively.

Dog Therapy at AMK-THKH: A Monthly Dose of Canine Comfort

Dog therapy at AMK-THKH is held on the third Thursday of every month at the hospital’s Level 1 Courtyard from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This hour-long session offers patients the opportunity to engage with a variety of dog breeds, ranging from affectionate Golden Retrievers and Australian Shepherds to charming Chihuahuas and Bichon Frises.

The Objective: Emotional Support Through Canine Interaction

Dogs are known for their innate ability to provide emotional support. AMK-THKH’s dog therapy program harnesses this ability by creating an environment where patients can engage with these animals in a relaxed, non-clinical setting. For many patients, these interactions serve as a form of emotional relief, helping to improve mood, reduce feelings of loneliness, and even spark memories of pets they once owned.

The presence of the dogs alone uplifts spirits, but patients are encouraged to actively engage with the animals. They can play fetch, offer treats, and enjoy gentle physical contact, such as petting and hugging. This interaction offers not only emotional support but also mild physical activity, which is beneficial for patients who may have limited mobility.

Assessment of Furry Volunteers

Not all dogs are suited for this important role. The hospital conducts a thorough assessment to ensure each dog's obedience, temperament, and comfort in social settings. To participate, dogs must exhibit calm behavior, particularly when being handled by people other than their owners. They must also be sociable with other dogs and able to remain composed in the presence of large groups.

To maintain safety, owners are required to submit vaccination certificates, and the dogs must have been with their owners for at least six months to ensure a strong, trusting relationship.

Safety Protocols for Patients and Animals

Safety is paramount in the dog therapy program. Owners must remain with their pets at all times, and staff members — including volunteer teams and nurses — are present to manage patient interactions. The hospital ensures that only referred patients participate in the therapy, providing a controlled and safe environment for both the animals and patients. In the event of any restlessness from the dogs, the staff is prepared to step in and maintain order, ensuring the session runs smoothly.

Addressing Allergies and Phobias

To address potential allergic reactions or phobias, the hospital takes a proactive approach. Clinical teams consult with patients before referring them to the program, discussing their interests and any underlying concerns they may have, such as respiratory issues or fears of certain animals. Patients with pre-existing respiratory problems are excluded from the therapy sessions to ensure their safety.

The Healing Impact of Animal-Assisted Therapy

At AMK-THKH, the Dog Therapy and Cat Therapy programs are designed with the well-being of the patients at the forefront. These sessions offer a much-needed emotional respite for patients coping with the stresses of long-term treatment or recovery. The opportunity to engage with animals provides joy, emotional relief, and, for some, triggers fond memories of past pets.

The benefits of AAT extend beyond emotional well-being. Studies have shown that spending time with animals can lower blood pressure, reduce pain, and improve overall mood. The structured, calm environment of these therapy sessions, coupled with the soothing influence of the animals, creates a supportive atmosphere conducive to healing.

Building Community Connections

One of the key aspects of the AAT programs is the way they foster community connections. The presence of the animals encourages patients to communicate with one another, breaking down social barriers and creating an environment of shared joy. For patients who may feel isolated during their medical journey, these interactions offer valuable opportunities to connect with fellow patients, staff, and volunteers.

AMK-THKH’s Animal-Assisted Therapy program represents an innovative approach to patient care, harnessing the healing power of animals to promote emotional well-being and social interaction. The structured Dog Therapy and Cat Therapy programs provide patients with a unique form of emotional support, while also fostering physical engagement and building a sense of community. As the program continues to grow and evolve, AMK-THKH remains committed to enhancing the lives of its patients through the simple, yet profound, connection between humans and animals.
